According to NASA,A diminutive asteroid will today pass within 76,000 miles (122,000 km) of Earth at 12:46 GMT.
The body – dubbed 2010 AL30 – was discovered by the LINEAR survey of MIT’s Lincoln Laboratories on 10 January. Since its orbital period is “nearly identical to the Earth’s one year period”, there have been suggestions it may be a rocket stage orbiting the Sun.
However, NASA explains that its orbit “reaches the orbit of Venus at its closest point to the sun and nearly out to the orbit of Mars at its furthest point, crossing the Earth’s orbit at a very steep angle”.
Furthermore, “trajectory extrapolations show that this object cannot be associated with any recent launch and it has not made any close approaches to the Earth since well before the Space Age began”. Accordingly, it’s “very unlikely” that the object is man-made, and it’s probably a near-Earth asteroid roughly “10-15 meters in size”.

An orbiting space telescope launched earlier this year by NASA has spotted five new planets that range in size from about the diameter of Neptune to that of Jupiter—the largest planet in Earth’s solar system.
The so-callled exoplanets are located in distant parts of space, and orbit stars that are hotter and larger than the Sun.
Temperatures on the newly found bodies range from 2,200 to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, far too hot to support any form of life known to science. Their orbits range from 3.3 to 4.9 days.
NASA said the discoveries validate the Kepler space telescope mission.
NASA dubbed the planets Kepler 4b, 5b, 6b, 7b, and 8b.
Kepler last year discovered HAT-P-7, another exoplanet that’s about 1,000 light years from Earth.
As the dawn of New Year approaches, many countries will witness “Partial Lunar Eclipse” and “Blue Moon”.

‘Partial Lunar Eclipse’:
A partial lunar eclipse, “Chandra Grahan”, will take place in India between December 31, 2009 and early hours of January 1, 2010.The time of this partial eclipse time from 17:17:07 GMT to 21:28:15 GMT. The corresponding India time of the Grahan is from 22:47 hrs on December 31, 2009 to 02:58 hrs on January 1, 2010.
According to NASA, this is a partial lunar eclipse and is visible in India, Nepal, Dubai, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Singapore, Bangladesh, Burma, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and other places in Asia (eastern hemisphere).

“BLUE MOON”:
For the first time in almost 20 years, a bright “blue moon” will grace New Year’s Eve celebrations worldwide.
If the skies are clear, revelers looking up at midnight will get an eyeful of the second full moon of the month—commonly called a blue moon. The last time a blue moon appeared on New Year’s Eve was in 1990, and it won’t happen again until 2028.
“Rising in the east at sunset, the New Year’s Eve full moon will reach its highest point at midnight.Full moons around winter solstice rise their highest for the entire year.Even if you are downtown in a large city, if it is clear at the stroke of midnight the moon will be very visible if you look up”, noted Jack Horkheimer, director of the Miami Space-Transit Planetarium and host of PBS television’s long-running show Star Gazer.

The common used phrase in English “Once in Blue Moon” refers to something that occurs very rarely.
The term “BLUE MOON” has nothing to do with the colour Blue of the moon.
History of “BLUE MOON”
Most years on average have 12 full moons, with 1 appearing each month.That’s because the lunar month—the time it takes the moon to cycle through its phases—corresponds closely to the calendar month.
But the calendar year is actually based on the solar cycle, or the time it takes Earth to make one trip around the sun. This means a year is not evenly divisible by lunar months, so every three years or so there are 13 full moons.
The farmer’s almanac further divided the year into four seasons, with each season lasting three months. When a given season saw four full moons, the almanac dubbed the third moon as a blue moon.

“True” Blue Moon
Before the term “blue moon” more often referred to the rare instances when the moon actually seemed to turn blue, as can happen under certain atmospheric conditions.
“After a forest fire or volcanic eruption, there may be enough particulate matter in the air so that the moon can take on a bluish tinge,”
For instance, a “true” blue moon occurred in 1950 after a large forest fire in Canada blew smoke across most of the Northern Hemisphere.
Another appeared in 1980 after the last major eruption of Mount St. Helens, which sent tons of ash into the upper atmosphere.

On Dec 9th 2009,8:45am, a giant spiral blue light dominated the Noway Sky baffling the onlookers,Norwegians,experts,world top scientists and military experts. Everybody was awe-struck looking at the pre-dawn sky seeing this incredible spiral blue light which lasted for 2 minutes.This spiral blue light is beleived to have been risen from behind the mountain,it later reached the middle of the sky and started rotating for few minutes and later disappeared!
This phenomenon has been dubbed ‘Star Gate’ by experts and scientists.
Many theories ranging from a misfired Russian missile, meteor fireball, never-before-seen type of northern light, ‘black hole’ and even alien activity were all proposed for this spectacular event!
